A child can be registered on our waiting list at any time. It is never too soon to put their name down. Children are currently admitted to nursery at any time after they reach the age of 2 years. When a vacancy occurs, the first child on the list who is old enough is offered the place. If a parent feels that their child is not ready at that stage, the child’s name can remain on the list for admittance at a later date.
Background to the nursery
In 1977 Molly Nesham, a qualified nursery teacher, opened a playgroup, 3 mornings a week, in the Church of the Holy Spirit hall in Crawcrook. At this time there was no other pre-school provision in the village and the playgroup became extremely popular.
As attitudes to nursery education changed and government policies were introduced the playgroup sessions extended to 5 a week and the group was OFSTED registered and inspected. However the ever increasing government regulations were often difficult to meet when operating in a shared building and staff found the limitations frustrating. We started to look for a way of getting our own building but met with numerous disappointments as ideas failed.
In May 2002 the playgroup celebrated its silver jubilee, and in the same year we finally received planning permission for our own nursery building in the centre of the village. In September 2002 Bright Sparks Nursery opened in a purpose designed building to the delight of staff, children and parents.
In April 2012 we bought the old medical centre building and after extensive building works and refurbishment this became our new nursery in September 2012. The new outdoor play areas were completed in 2013. We now offer 10 sessions of nursery education each week. Bright Sparks Nursery is privately owned and managed by Carolyn Below and Debbie Liddle.
